Untitled, 2015, Oil on canvas, cm.h. 152.5 x 122
This work is an example of the artist's restless experimentation. Abstraction is embraced as a risk, leading him to avoid identifying with any particular style or fashion. His work often involves the repetition of certain formal motifs while varying the chromatic elements and altering the composition. In this piece, the painted frame plays a significant role in harmonizing with the deep vibrant colors of the canvas.
Josh Smith lives and works in New York. He has had numerous solo exhibitions in the United States and abroad, including Hidden Darts at MUMOK in Vienna in 2008, Who Am I at De Hallen Haarlem in 2009, Josh Smith at the Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève in 2009, The American Dream at The Brant Foundation in Greenwich, CT in 2011, and most recently, Josh Smith at MACRO Testaccio, Rome in 2015.
