The work was exhibited in 1980 at the Sonnabend Gallery in New York and shortly thereafter at the Konrad Fischer Galerie in Düsseldorf. The artwork is from the historic series Untitled (Teste nere) in which the artist re-elaborates the classical face shape in his own language and poetic way, transforming it into skeleton faces that emerge from shadow and stain.
Jannis Kounellis has been represented by Christian Stein since 1967.
Jannis Kounellis is widely regarded as one of the most influential artists of his generation. His profound and evocative art made him a pioneer of the Arte Povera movement.
